Promote Your Business With Speaking Engagements

 

A sales management team at a new company may want to use speaking engagements as a way to promote their business, as this can help to establish a firm as a leader within their vertical.

Setting up the foundation

Getting these engagements can be difficult for a new business, as there has to be a level of expertise within the organization that could be promoted to other companies. This may come from speaking at smaller events and working your way up to larger audiences.

A sales management team should put up a speaker site, a website specific to hiring the services of one person within your company to participate in speaking events.

The next step is to create a one-sheet. If you are going to be the one giving the speech, this document is one page long and includes a  photograph of you, topics that you are comfortable speaking on, the value you bring to audience and contact information for other engagements. The company should also have an electronic version to email to other organizations, as this may be the best way to reach a large number of businesses.

Finding events to speak at

As far as the promotion goes, one of the best ways to get engagements is to contact the chamber of commerce or merchants association in your area. You want to let them know that you are a speaker on a specific set of topics.

What happens after that is a group of businesses get together for chamber events or merchants association meetings and they start looking for speakers. Set it up if they contact you and begin networking and establishing yourself in the industry.

Get a list of all of the different associations that would be a part of your target market. You can go and say that you would like to come and speak and add valued information to their companies.

Get relationships with everyone. Their objective is membership, as the chamber and merchants association want to grow in size, and they do this by having people come to their events.

You need to position yourself as an expert that will have people come to see you speak. They need to provide value to their members. Position it as you want to help them bring more individuals into their organization.

Honing speaking skills

Make sure you are a good speaker.

Whether that means having a coach or going to something like toastmasters, there has to be some sort of objective evaluation of your speaking skills. Just because you may know a lot about a certain topic, does not mean that you are a good speaker. If you are not afraid to get up in front of people, this does not mean you will be able to reach these people effectively.

You can get someone who has skills in this area to give you instruction, teaching points.

There is nothing worse than somebody trying to promote themselves as a speaker when no one has the guts to tell them that they are not good at it.

If you are a really good speaker, you are going to get passed around. That is how you build a business.

You may have to use another person in your organization to do the speaking functions if you are not the best speaker at the company. Corporations hire exceptional speakers to promote their interests, so this model may be adhered to on a smaller scale.
